Public Sculpture
Saltaire Village is a celebration of stone, from the functional to the artistic. The stunning mix of Italianate architecture and highly detailed stonemasonry elevate the commonplace structures beyond their function or necessity. Everywhere you turn in Saltaire, from the United Reformed Church to Saltaire Primary School, the Hospital to the Alms Houses, there are elegantly crafted examples of the stonemason’s art.
Saltaire is also home to some fine examples of bronze and stone sculpture and legend has it that as midnight strikes, Thomas Milnes’ Lions in Victoria Road, intended as models for the lions in Trafalgar Square, still take a moonlit stroll down to the River Aire for a drink. In Roberts Park, Derwent Wood’s statue of Sir Titus Salt, commissioned to celebrate the centenary of his birth, has its back to the Village in order to observe villagers enjoying a stroll along the promenade terrace while listening to Salt’s prize band playing in the bandstand. |
