Christopher House
Chris House is a mixed media artist based in York. While studying fine art at university he was introduced to the artisan craft of knitting. Born from a fascination of the practice, he explores the materiality of knitting and the idea that something so fragile has become a symbol of comfort, safety, tradition and sentiment.
The main aspect to his work is the quaint and twee feel given to objects associated with strength and stretching the knitting, not only to expose its individual strands but to create tension and a sturdy surface. Some also show the maternal aspects of the craft and how a piece of knitting can be handed down through generations. |
