What I love about working with wire is its immediacy, it’s like making three-dimensional drawings and as with drawing, there is a similar direct connection between eye, brain and hands so that I always feel closely connected to the making process. Every bend in the wire has been made by my fingers and the help of a small pair of pliers.

Before I start a new piece I have an idea about how I’d like it to look when complete. Once I’ve sketched in the overall proportions and framework using the first few strands, I’m free to experiment, using the weave and natural tension of the wire. The wire is like a line which leads the eye on a journey around the subject, describing anatomical form, implying mass and bone structure and lending a sense of visual rhythm through inter-woven curves and circles which help to convey energy and dynamic movement.
